History of DEMRP
DEMRP was established in 2000 as a social and economic regeneration partnership. The Partnership is a formation of Black & Minority Ethnic (BME) community groups, voluntary & community organisations.
This partnership was initially established to support the co-ordination function and focus on collaborative action to foster social and economic regeneration and the promotion of education, employment, training and learning opportunities to BME individuals, especially woman, the elderly and young people.
The DEMRP Partnership was established based on ‘consultation work’ conducted with local BME communities & voluntary sector organisations.
DEMRP is a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee and is managed by a diverse base of trustees derived from local communities who supports DEMRP's ethos of ensuring the organisation works to the needs of people and organisations it serves.

The key findings of the consultations were:
There was a lack of engagement, consultation and participation of the BME sector at regional, sub-regional and local level in relation to social and economic regeneration activities and services.
There were higher levels of unemployment and disadvantage faced by BME Communities in deprived areas than in the mainstream community in those same areas.
BME Communities did not perceive themselves as having accessed their fair share of regeneration resources.
The key recommendations were that the following were needed:
To develop a social and economic regeneration partnership targeted at BME and hard to reach communities.
To recruit a staff team dedicated to responding to the specific internal and organisational needs of BME community groups. This team’s remit was to be the provision of information and guidance on
Securing funding. Developing networks. Social and economic regeneration agendas. Social and economic regeneration delivery. Developing education, employment and training opportunities for BME and hard to reach communities. |
